2. Grab Bars

Moen Suction Shower Grab Bar Moen Grab Bar

As far as products for elderly living alone, perhaps none is more useful than grab bars. Getting up from the toilet alone, or in and out of the shower safely is a key to staying safely on your feet. We've displayed two types of grab bars here, one is a suction based grab bar and the other requires installment. Both are the best in their class. If you can we'd prefer the durability of the installed option, but not all situations allow for it. The one benefit of the suction grab bar is it can travel with you! Regardless, you'll be much better off with either solution.

  1. Hola! me gustaría saber qué productos son diseñados para los ancianos que cada día se sienten solos, estoy buscando algo para mi abuelita. Saludos

    • For those who can't read Spanish, the above translates as follows "Hi! I would like to know what products are designed for the elderly who feel lonely every day, I am looking for something for my grandmother."

Vanessa, the only way to relieve loneliness, is by increasing your mother's interactions with others. This can be done with family, friends and community. Invite your mother over for dinner, taking her out for a coffee, invite her to watch your kids play soccer, organize a get together (cards, tea, etc.) with her friends, have her participate at church, events at the library or community center. Take her out to the movies on a weekly schedule. To help keep in touch with her while managing your busy schedule, get her an iPad and facetime with her daily. Have your siblings, kids and friends facetime her regularly as well. Have her read or tell the grandkids bed time stories every night, or in the least have them call her before bed to say good night and I love you.

You can also explore if there are social games she can play online with her friends like cards, mahjong, backgammon or other games.

      Does that help?

  2. That's really informative. Gonna share this to my grandpa. He needs shower chair

  3. Do you rekommend any protective gear for a relative with bad balance?

    • Hi Fredrik,

Probably one of the most important things you can do for someone with bad balance, in terms of gear, is make sure they have a grab bar by every toilet, a grab bar and seat in the shower and a grab bar on entry into the shower. We would also recommend you install bannisters on both sides of any stairwell. Lastly, make sure they do not wear any foot wear with high heels, or without a backing around the heel.

      Hope that helps!

    • Jennifer DiSipio

Great advice from admin! They do also make hip pad protectors to wear, built in like underwear, for people who fall often to prevent a hip fracture. The VA gives these to some of their patients.

  4. Medi Alert Alarms for people subject to falls,& live alone.

  5. Which is safer and better: A bathtub fitter with the door and shower nozzle or a walk in shower with a bench?

    Thank you for your suggestions.

    • Hi Jay,

Both can be equally safe. What you're trying to solve for is being able to sit while cleaning ones self, a low lip to walk over and a slip-free floor. The one thing you might want to add to the shower are grab bars. Other than that, go with the one that suits your personal preferences, layout or budget best. Sound good?

      Kindest,

  6. Can anybody recommend a good audiobook device for seniors

    • Audible is a great place to start for purchasing audiobooks. A simple Kindle would be a great device for listening with headphones or an Echo device for listening via a speaker. They all work together seemlessly!

  10. HI! I need something to help me apply lotion to my back. I can reach part of it, but not all and I have very dry skin. I'm thinking of something like a back-scratcher only instead of claws it would have a lotion applicator attached to it. Has anyone seen an item like this for sale?

    • Lotion Applicators like the one from GranNaturals. I found one on Amazon for 15 dollars

      • Great idea, especially for those with range of motion issues. Thanks Olivia!

  12. i want to start volunteering with also the help of other friends at different homes of elderly people living alone to make life easy for them e.g run errands, cook for them, clean, keep them company and other few things please what are the supplies needed for this?

    • Hi Ellah,

That's a beautiful idea! The supplies you'll need will be heavily dependent on the services you'll be providing and the care required by those you'll be looking after. Assuming it's exclusively for errands, cooking, cleaning and keeping them company as you mentioned above, all you'll really need are slip on foot covers (keep interior clean as well as your feet), sanitation gloves, purel and disinfectant wipes.

If you're cleaning and cooking you should be using the supplies provided to you by the homeowner. Otherwise, you can get some on their behalf.

If you're making any purchases on someone else's behalf, make sure to keep ALL receipts, so no one can accuse you of misappropriating funds. Even better, ask for a gift card, so the amount is fixed and all transactions can be recorded and tracked.

Most important, share your beautiful energy and your smile! Your presence alone will make all the difference. Your community is lucky to have you!

      Kindest,
